László Almásy
László Almásy in "O Sahara Desconhecido"
László Almásy nasceu em Borostyank, Hungria, em 1895, no seio de uma familia aristocrática mas sem título nobiliárquico.
Combateu na Primeira Guerra Mundial, como piloto da Força Aérea, recebendo várias condecorações. Participou na restauração da monarquia na Hungria, tendo conduzido a viatura que levou o Rei Carlos IV a Budapeste, desde o exílio, tendo recebido das mãos do monarca o título de Conde e a sua gratidão.
Após a guerra, dedicou-se às suas duas grandes paixões: os automóveis e o deserto.
Assim, ao serviço da marca áustriaca "Steyr AutomobileWerke", realizou em 1926 um teste de resistência aos seus veículos, completando o trajecto entre Alexandria, no Egipto, e o Sudão, ao longo do rio Nilo.
Almásy descobriu uma nova gruta, cujas paredes estavam repletas de pinturas rupestres, representando aqueles e outros animais. Mas o aspecto mais sensacional da descoberta foram as pinturas de homens a nadar: no meio do deserto do Sahara, a escassos quiilómetros do Grande Mar de Areia, havia água, há milhares de anos. As pinturas fizeram sensação no mundo científico, e foram provavelmente a mais importante descoberta de Almásy.
